Silver Link Electrical Problem?

I am lucky to have 4 locos and run them regularly. Yesterday my Silver Link developed what I beleive to be an electrical promblem - it had not had any previous problem.

Having placed it on the track and applying power to heat it up the regulator servo activated (back and forth) and the indicator lights alternated between red and green as if if were changing direction. It would not stop no matter what I did.

Any ideas how to stop this - a new decoder perhaps?

All suggestions welcome - thank you

I changed the lead and the regulator movement continued but a lot slower. I have ordered a new lead with the circuit board connector and will try that as the exsiting one on the board is also brownish. Will update further hopefully next week

Rhythmic stoppages

Does anyone find they get rhythmic stoppages or rough running on their loco at longer period than the wheel revolutions?

My 6th restoration job has turned difficult, due to a Mallard with a strange mis-step every 4th revolution. At low speed or high speed the loco pauses briefly once every 4th turn of the wheel.

Loco top speed is greatly reduced.

My guess would be that one of the tiny O rings between the valve block and cylinder block is compressed and partially covering the steam passage, or debris from a deteriorating valve pressure pad blocking a steamway.

Whistle woes

I have had great success getting an 2004 Mallard running sweetly again, but the whistle has been fighting me. It was falling apart every time I removed it to work on the loco.

I went to steam up a couple of nights ago and there was a wisp of smoke, faintly brown smoke, looked a bit like steam backlit by the red cabin light, and that was the end of the loco.

I took it apart and found that one of the pipes of the whistle had fallen off and created a short circuit when I carried the loco from where it had stopped back to where I fill the water and oil drop. The whistle is in a poor state with an end cap missing as well. It all seems so loose, I am disappointed, but not surprised that it has destroyed itself.

I have ordered a new circui…

I have been trying a variety of different things. Some are showing some signs of being worth pursuing. Is there any chance that the club could produce another maintenance video, one was promised in one of the other vids. There isn't a lot to a whistle, but that doesn't mean it's easy to get right.

Although I got the circuit board fixed, the damaged one was well and truly burnt out and nothing was salvageable.

I've acquired a few more locos now and a small selection therefore of some of the problems that come with whistles. Everything from blocked ports in the regulator valve to whisper quite sounding and even a working example that really points out what I'm missing from the others!

Are spare couplings available?

Hello, the rear coupling on my Mallard Live Steam Tender is broken.

Are spares available and if so, what do I need to buy?

Thanks in advance,

Glenn.
