Social Media in OOLS?
The committee set up the FaceBook page for the Model Mallard Steam Challenge, really to try and connect with our future members. Judging by the almost 2,000 views of the video that Chris posted - and these are people who consciously decided to use their time to look at the video - there is a future for social media in the OOLS club.
But what about you, our existing loyal OOLS members?
The demographics of Social Media means that there will be a percentage of club members who do not use and have no use for FaceBook, Pinterest, Google+ or the other similar forums. Applications like Whats App and Hangouts do different things. That does not make a non user a "Ludite", far from it, it is about a personal choice.
What I wonder is, would there be any interest in having a "closed" group for OOLS club members, on our Facebook page? Have you seen and used the white "F" on the banner at the top of all forum pages to look at our page?
Would a closed group provide added value to club members? It would provide a "push" service, which the web site cannot do and would be a way to get news out quickly - but only to those who want to receive it in that way.
We are a virtual club, with members spread round the world. I'm writing this in my home, while the UK is still asleep, as the sun rises over Mediterranean olive groves and citrus orchards, while our antipodean members are about to turn the lights out for the night! People are busy and some might find it of benefit, some will not.
Social media has a place, but will not be for everyone. So over to you, our club members, what do you think?....

All this underlines the need to use whatever platforms (good pun) that youngsters use to reach them and invite them to our world.
We are all fed up with this Brexit rhetoric but the fact is that if this wonderful Britain is to substantiate itself in the future we need to boost the young skilled we have now to appreciate the skills of the past and take them further.
A rather jolly young teenage girl came to us on Tuesday and took a mallard to 131mph! She was punching the air with pleasure that she had beaten the record and promptly disappeared, she won’t forget her dabble with steam for a while me thinks.. video to view available!
