Prices post MEE
I have been looking on Ebay since going to the MEE last Saturday; particularly comparing current asking prices and "sold listngs" detailing ACTUAL prices acheived over the last few months. It is noticeable that in the last week both "buy it now" and auction start prices for sets and locos have increased considerably. I wondered whether this was a by-product of the increased interest and therefore demand caused by the demos at shows. Bottom line for me is this is probably NOT a good time to look for one's first loco to get started. I think I'll leave things until supply and demand get back to normal! Is this a recurring thing after every big show?

I agree with Nick. BIN on ebay is almost always unrealistically high.
You should get a decent Mallard set for £450 or thereabouts - around what they were selling for 15 years ago. Try to get one that the owner says is OK, not one where the owner says "looks OK but havent been able to test". If it claims to be new try zooming in on the pic of the oil syringe, if you can see a residue of oil in the throat of the syringe it's been used!
good luck
