Brand New set - should I use it?
Hi all, and thanks for the warm welcome received. @Nick Beard you asked me to check for rail marks and other tell tale signs, having looked very very closely I can not see any running marks at all, even screws on the loco look untouched. Steam oil sealed seringes have no residue and the cables connectors are unmarked. So my non expert eyes would say it's new.
Loco is from week 50 of 2003
So on to the real Big question, do I store it away for potential increase in value in another 20/30 years and seek to buy a used one to use. Or is it unlikey to rise in value much more, and best just to use what I have?
Opinions please

These models were made to run really and the mallard sets are not where the collectors money sits!
I would have it striped and rebuilt to running standards and enjoy it.
If it has never been run and is seized it will need the above action to make it run and then it would need running in to enjoy its beauty.
Many of the well run locos out there you could buy cheaper are also in need of replacement parts due to wear and tear so it costs either way.
Your choice really, I could never buy a model anything and never enjoy its running attributes.
I’ve had my Mallard 12 years now and a recent service means it’s fit for purpose if you know what I mean.
We could direct you to strip it down, clean and service it as Adrian implies, but would you know the ins and outs of the finer trickery of these beauties and be able to reassemble and tune to running satisfaction? I doubt it really without many hours of toil and frustration, just ask Chris Oakes.
We have tutorials on the website to guide you through the ab initio steps but bear in mind it has taken the Club engineers 12 years to gain the knowledge they need to know exactly what to do and when. Not even Hornby's late John Humpries was up to that level!
