Sticking every 4th revolution

Trigo - sticking !

Hello all,

This is one of the club's roadshow locos which is driving me up the wall trying to fix. There is a mechanical sticking problem, which I can't find. It sticks every 4th turn - usually an indication of a timing shaft problem. This is a replacement timing shaft - no different to the original. I've also dropped the bevel gearbox by 0.2mm, by putting shims in - again no difference. This is running on steam, but it's much the same on air, although not quite as bad. Any ideas?

Mind you, this loco has various other problems so it need just about everything replacing!

That is odd David, if you were to disconnect the piston rods and turn manually, is there any mechanical resistence? split gear ( i'm sure you have done all this), debris in gear teeth root? small blockage in one of the rotary valve holes?

Please post if you do find the cause, as I am most interested to understand these marvels.

Hello all,

I’m completely new to live steam, only getting the Mallard set back in December, and fortunately I managed to find one completely sealed and never used.

I have ran Mallard on the rolling road for around 4 hours plus since then, and I tried it on my main layout for the first time today. The locomotive was trying to go into gear but wouldn’t go and the whistle kept staying on and wouldn’t go off.

So I let the locomotive cool down and went back to the rolling road and now it won’t work on there either.

What might the issue be. As I’ve tried doing some research but can’t find anything.

Kind regards,

The tutorials have been a great help, as there’s only so much you can learn from the manual book you get with the set.

I’m definitely hooked and once I’ve learnt a lot more I’ll definitely be looking into getting another one.

PCB Cover Issue

Has anyone come across this problem: The replacement 3D printed cover has warped with heat. What temperature should this part of the loco withstand? What material is used? I have used these replacements on other locos with no problem, so what has changed here? Presumably they are there to insulate th

Hi Chris, How old is the cover?? The earlier printed covers were printed in Pet-g and we have changed to ABS as it is more stable. Nothing, even hornby originals wil resist the higher temps caused due to an electrical issue. When you make your next parts order, I will include a replacement for you.

Front End Maintenance

Recently I decided to do some in depth maintenance on my locos, and it can be frightening to find things that need fixing. On removing the rotary valve cover on my Silver Link, which was actually running ok, I discovered the rotary valve had a deep concentric groove worn in it from the compression spring, the wear pad, what was left of it, served no purpose at all. Needless to say, a new valve, pad and gasket was fitted.

Elsewhere, other inspections found the wires to the wiper board were only held in place by the 'Grace of God': Age and the constant heating and cooling had takin it's toll, the wires were only attached by a couple of strands.

In general taking time to check all the screws for their tightness is also worthwhile.
