A3 Valve/Regulator Drive problem

Dear everybody,

I'm the owner of A3 Flying Scotsman leave steam (used) and faced the following issue. The Regulator Drive Rod has been somehow broken and "fixed" by soldering (see pictures).

Now the regulator seems working, servo and gears rotating, even the drive rod moving. But the steam valve not working, no steam flow and, of course, no train movement. Control LEDs at certain switch from green to red, then both light at the same time, which I also think is abnormal.

I would be grateful for any ideas on how to fix this.

I recommend that you try running the loco on air. (if required an adaptor is available from the OOLS section of the shop).

With the regulator fully open loosen the four screws on the superheater and see if there is a good flow of air. If there is then remove the front rotary valve cover and check for a good flow of air from the inlet hole.

You should find enough info the help partially dissemble the loco in the following links

Maintenance Issues for Running Enjoyment

My Golden Fleece wasn't working well, 4 coaches was all it could pull. Time for a microscopic look.

(When I do my maintenance I have the loco on a rig I have made which isolates the driving wheels from any road contact thereby negating any friction from wheel and rolling road. To do this I remove the loco body and the front of the loco is held on 2 pins in the front mounting holes and the tender is on some track for the power.)

I discovered the timing on Golden Fleece was very lumpy, and even adjusting the settings on the timing adjuster didn't improve the problem. So, looking further afield I thought the glad nuts were screwed in too much, a quarter turn was all that was required and voila! it can now pull 8 coaches with ease.

Sticking every 4th revolution

Trigo - sticking !

Hello all,

This is one of the club's roadshow locos which is driving me up the wall trying to fix. There is a mechanical sticking problem, which I can't find. It sticks every 4th turn - usually an indication of a timing shaft problem. This is a replacement timing shaft - no different to the original. I've also dropped the bevel gearbox by 0.2mm, by putting shims in - again no difference. This is running on steam, but it's much the same on air, although not quite as bad. Any ideas?

Mind you, this loco has various other problems so it need just about everything replacing!

I have noticed that the timing shaft is kicking forwards slightly on each revolution. It's visible on the first video, but can be seen better on this clip - look carefully at the black gear on the timing shaft. It's only a small movement, but coincides with the sticking of the wheels every 4th revolution.

I looked underneath and there's no visible movement forwards or backwards of the gear that meshes with the timing shaft gear.

What could cause the forwards backwards movement? It's supposed to just rotate.

Any thoughts gratefully received.
