Sir Nigel Gresley
Just reregistered on the new forum so woul like to fill some space. I recently picked up an ebay Mallard set. I was not expecting much as description was not the usual unrun or hardly used. But at £158 for a Mallard set with controllers I thought it would at least make spare parts. When it finally arrived set looked like it was stored in a damp garden shed. Sorry I did not keep photos. Box was damp and falling apart. Soil, spiders web and spiders. Engine very grubby. Broken bogie wheels and tender wheels. Controller showing corrosion. Window glazing missing.
I started by taking the loco apart. I had spares to replace the damaged wheels. Cleaned the dirt and grease from the body work. Internals looked quite good. Cleaned and lubed everything. I took the outer casings from the controllers removed corrosion and resprayed. I replaced the seal on the water tank and oil filler. Hooked everything up to the rolling road and started testing.
Heating up nicely. Full steam pressure. Started moving the leaver. Very clear whistle tone. Wheels started moving with a little help after about 12 throws of the lever from green light. Running quite well but possibly loosing some power from piston seals. All other seals were worn so I expect these will need replacing also. Anyway, running better than my original Mallard so both at least 2 locos going to Hornby for a deserved service.
As I already have Mallard I decided on a new livery. Sir Nigel Gresley.
Some initial photos from my phone. More details to add. I am leaving it high gloss as that is how it is in current state.

I saw Eric's bon accord this year.
I didn't think it looked bad,
there was oil on the body but not as much as there was in the image.
