Basic Timing - Using The Oakes Method
Hello fellow OOLSers! I have been studying Chris Oakes method of timing. For those who have been following my blog you will be aware of my simple test rig which I have used in this exercise. I have dismantled the necessary parts to get to the gearbox cog, set the basic position of the driving wheels and piston and re-assembled . Connected an air supply (30psi) and Hey Presto, I get a lovely smooth running motion. (First time lucky? who knows.) Next is to run it live to fine tune. Buying the boiler airline adaption kit is a must as it sets up the procedure, as you can see from the photo it screws into the tender. Be sure to empty any water out first, you don't want water in the cylinders. Also adjust the regulator wiper to nearly fully open as Chris explains in his video. I found this way of timing very simple and I have to admit, the electric screwdriver does a wonderful job!! For those who have been following my Bittern project, you can see a modified Mallard in the photo without its valences, more on that another time.
