OOLS Video Tutorials

The OOLS Committee hope that you have all managed to stay safe and well during the pandemic and have maybe even had time to progress some of your own projects.

Unfortunately the lock down occurred just as we were making plans to expand the range of club OOLS Tutorial videos to include information about some of the routine maintenance tasks that are required to ensure your OOLS locos continue to perform well.

As the lock-down restrictions have now eased a little we have decided that towards the end of August it will be safe enough for a couple of the team to get together to produce some new tutorials that will then be published during September.

So . . . the question is which of the many maintenance task do club members want to know about first?

Please visit and leave a message as we would really like to hear from you which are items you would most like some information on and hopefully we can then produce the tutorials that will be of most benefit to you.

For very sound health reasons Maurice remains in total lock-down but as the general lock-down restrictions have now eased a little we have decided that it is now safe enough for a couple of the team to get together to produce some new tutorials that will then be published during September.

So at the start of the 2020 August bank holiday weekend plan B resulted in Nick travelling up to Glossop where we again commandeered the conservatory for railway purposes and we spent a pleasant couple of days filming the next stages of the OOLS club tutorial series.

Maintenance tutorials by their very nature tend to be more involved and therefore more protracted than the initial inspection tutorials and so most take longer to film so I am afraid that there was just not enough time to cover every suggestion in the list above. The ones selected were those for which we have received the most requests, either on the thread, via email or the many previous member requests fielded during previous Roadshow event (see - we do take notice!)

We used three cameras so after shooting eight different tutorials Nick has now taken away hours of footage that will need to be processed into the finished tutorials . . . . be patient . . . Nick is one of the few club officials who is still working full time!

The subjects we managed to cover are:

1. Identify additional tools & equipment useful for servicing OOLS locos.

2. Change A4 piston & gland nut O rings - Demonstrate the new cylinder tool.

3. Change A3 piston & gland nut O rings - Demonstrate the new cylinder tool.

4. Servicing and/or changing the tender wheels and copper pickup strips.

5. Changing Superheater seal & cleaning the regulator valve.

6. Fitting the new OOLS A4 replacement rotary valve cover.

7. How to re-time a loco from scratch.

8. How to adjust the timing.

As they say . . watch this space . . .
