Last week I just purchased a Mallard set. I tested it stationary and seems to be responding well to all commands and running smoothly. I am certainly impressed with the engineering of the 00 live steam system. It certainly is easier to run than gas fired live steam systems!
I am new to 00 model railways but steam is one of my hobbies. Not sure how much time I will spend on the model railway side but the engines could well be irresistible.
My current steam collection consists of about twenty stationary model engines and fifteen mobiles and locomotives. The locomotives are Mamods (32 mm track) and two Hornby Rockets (3.5" track).
The Hornby Live Steam Rocket also got a lot of negative press (gas tank, lack of power) but with a bit of care and attention it can be a good performer. Let's hope that Hornby believes in the "Third Time Good Time" rule and brings out a live steam series again.
