Chichester Newbie
Hi all. My name’s Neil Macaulay. Now retired after years in engineering, first with The Royal Navy and then Defence Company QinetiQ. I have been a long standing hobbyist, as a youngster with Hornby OO until adult life took over! My hobbies have been mainly Radio Control aircraft but I did venture into Scalefour railways building one loco with more on the way until other things took over. I first saw Hornby Live Steam at the Alley Palley Model Engineers Exhibition last January and at first sight was hooked. Talking to the guys at the show persuaded me that this was perhaps just the thing for me and consequently bought a starter Mallard set. This sat to one side whilst I researched how to run these brilliant pieces of engineering but was unsure as to the quality of distilled water available from Ebay and the like so resolved to get some from this group at the recent Midlands Model Exhibition. A big thank you to Maurice (Morris?), Chris and Nick who spent a lot of time talking me through setting and starting a loco. I have now run my Mallard but it is at the stuttering stage not yet fully run in. I have also now got a mint unused Flying Scotsman to play with too!

Hi Adrian,
thanks for the advice. I bought the dvd at the show this last weekend and slowly working my way through it. I have started on my Mallard first of all and I’m having a few issues which I’ve just posted on the technical forum. It’s great to get involved in ‘proper’ engineering again!
