From what I remember of the old thread, it didn't go into quite that level of detail. Once the decoder is fitted in the loco, there is still the problem that DCC wants to control the speed of the DC motor, but here we need to control its position. Again, if I remember correctly that was achieved by the original poster by manually sending forwards/stop and reverse/stop commands manually at the DCC controller to nudge the steam regulator open a bit and closed a bit.
Good luck with the conversion - it's not a trivial task.
