Newbie - please be understanding

Evening all, having had OO for many years, I have been lucky enough to secure a childhood dream! being able to locate an unused Mallard set (so it looks)

Is there a way I can tell how old it is?

Before first run, should it be checked and serviced by the club?

I expect, to the learn controls I'm better getting a rolling road..... correct?

The set runs at 17v I believe..... so putting Pullman cars on track with lights inside would blow the lights perhaps, as they are designed for 12v I believe. Anyone got experience if indeed they will work fine, or how to get lights in carages working with LS
