Electric motor/wiper board
I am trying to get a non runner back in action. Water is heating but when I throw the lever on the controller nothing happens. Green light is on. No motor sound and no movement on the wiper board. I applied some power direct to the motor and it turns but still no change to the wiper board and gears do not seem to move either. The white heat protection on the red wire to the wiper board was burnt so I put a new wire on.
Other connections seem secure.
Any ideas?

Well if you can see the regulator operating then the most likely causes are that the gasket under the super heater has badly extruded and is interfering with the regulator valve and/or the regulator valve and seat are badly scored. On early A4s a white PTFE gasket was used here and this also caused the problem you describe.
