Making brass gears- advice sought
I'd like to be able to make my own small involute and worm gears in brass, for both my Hornby OO Live Steam locos and the HOe / N scale locos I make.
I'm a novice at this sort of thing. I have a vintage Lorch 8mm D-bed watchmaker's lathe (without indexing accessories) which might be suitable, but it seems a bit too small. Can anyone suggest a suitable lathe to do this sort of work on? Proxxon lathes such as their PD400 look interesting, but I can't see any references to gear cutting on their website.
To make matters more complex, I live in Beijing.

What great youtube clip! It confirms the old saying that was often heard in engineering maintenance shops across the country; "if a man made it, then a man can repair it." An approach that is true, but could prove to be very costly, especially in terms of time. That's often where the hobbyist has the advantages over industry.
As an alternative to the hobbing method I was envisioning using a involute cutter in the milling m/c with the gear blank held in an indexing head cutting a tooth at time.
Cheers
