Tender wheels - refurbishment

Hello all,

Following on from Nick's comment about trying to repair/refurbish tender wheels where possible.....I have a set of the old style wheels where the middle plastic section has melted and distorted. It's melted so much that some individual wheels have come out of it.

Has anyone tried to replace the central plastic section - it would need to be with something insulating and happy with the heat. I should imagine it only needs to be turned into an appropriately sized "tube" such that the wheels/stub axles can be fitted back into. Any suggestions for the best material ? ceramics ? resins ? bakelite ?

Thanks,

David

No, I couldn't machine it or grind it out either, the only way to get it out is by holding the wheel tread in the chuck and turning away the raised collar. I made a new brass collar drilled 2.4mm to press on to the remaining axle stub, and drilled a 3mm recess in the end to the centre, its only 1.5mm deep. The ceramic joiner is a rod bought from amazon, and cut to about 3.7mm long using a diamond disc in a dremel, this is then loctited (638) in place holding it all straight in the lathe
