Wheels not turning freely

Hi All!

Firstly, I am very pleased to have found this website and the OOLS club. What a marvellous resource this is. I am also amazed at the ingenuity and dedication of club members at keeping these machines running.

I have acquired a flying Scotsman from eBay. It appears to be in an as-new condition (or only having been run once or twice). I have run it on the rolling road for six 30 minute sessions as advised on this site. In the forward direction the loco runs relatively smoothly when at speed however the wheels require assistance with a toothpick to get them to start to turn. In reverse the wheels will often start spontaneously but spin rhythmically in a "lumpy" fashion. The maximum speed in reverse is quite restricted. When pushed on the track the wheels spin freely except for a point of resistance at the same point on each revolution.

Does this sound like a timing issue or is this likely to be something else given the resistance with manual movement of the wheels?

This is very reassuring to hear and is the sort of thing I was referring to when I complimented the dedication of the club members previously. I am also amazed that they have manufactured their own replacement parts! Truly top-notch work.
