Sorry for the stupid question, but how do you actually run the loco on compressed air with out heating the tender and super heater and only using the motor? or am I just missing a trick?

Yes that’s right, but you don’t actaually heat up the loco! Just hook up, turn on and hold the lever over to open the regulator to fully open not necessarily a medium setting, then disconnect. It is easier to see what is happening with the body off the loco.
you control the speed of the loco with the pressure of the air as you can see on the clip.
