High pitched squeal from loco electronics
I'm pleased to have got my first OO live steam engine working this evening. I do have a question though... there is a constant high pitched squeal from the circuit in the cab whenever the loco has power. It sounds like a speaker, as if it is an alarm of some kind. Is this normal?

In addition to Markus's document above, there are also various forum discussions related to the controller and its foibles (eg O/C & S/C fault detection). It also uses a measure of the loco "resistance" to shut down when the water runs out - when the thermal cutout under the boiler trips it open-circuits that heater, leading to a doubling in total resistance of the loco, which the controller detects and then shuts down as a safety mechanism.
It's worth making sure that any alternative power supply you use has a good, quick trip for short circuits.
It would be very interesting to see what you're thinking; you will get lots of useful advice on this forum.
