Accutrack II Speedometer Unit

As part of the ongoing process of improving the club Roadshow layout them committee have approved the purchase of an Acccutrack 2 Speedometer unit that will be fitted over the outer public access track.

It will be used to record the speed achieved by the loco drivers so that they will know when they have reached the steam speed record of 126mph.

So instead of just getting on with cutting out of a slot for the unit on the inside section of the outer track Nick starts faffing about cutting and gluing bits of plywood together. . . . . then he had the nerve to glue this contraption to our beautifully varnished art deco baseboard! . . . .the man has no shame!!! 🤓

Still, I suppose that I will have to admit that he knew what he was doing as this actually gave him a stable platform for the router so that he could safely make the cut and, as I suspect he already knew would happen, he gave it a quick clout and it came off . . .and left not a mark on our beautifully varnished baseboard.

This was followed by a bit of chisel work and then violá - we have a beautiful indent for the rear of the unit to sit in to ensure that vehicles passing thought it will not catch it and derail.

The next job was to cut and shape a piece of wood as a support.

Nick got really clever here, cut and shaped the bit of wood and then created an instant (well, very nearly instant) varnished look by smearing on a bit of superglue with his finger.

Sealed and varnished in one go . .the man’s a genius! . . . but no one will ever know cos’ we then covered it with bits of Velcro.

  • one side to stick to the existing curtain Velcro already in place

  • one side to stick the base of Speedtrap to

  • one side (shaped) to fasten the curtain to when the layout is assembled

However Velcro by it pull apart nature does not create a particularly solid fastening. It has really good grip so it is secure and the unit will not easily fall off but it is very ‘wobbly’, not ideal at all. . . 😏

Plan B (there is always a plan B) . . . .

More head scratching and a quick bit of guesstimated measuring and Nick whittled up another small bit of wood and stuck it to the baseboard just where the back of the unit sits in that loverly little indent created earlier.

Two more bits of Velcro and the Speedtrap is secure . . . and I mean secure . . . we couldn’t get the bloody thing off!!!

The answer . . a credit card . gingerly used to work the into the Velcro to loosen it. Now we just need to always ensure that there is a credit card present whenever we go to show.

The final job was to apply a bit of varnish to finish off and seal the indent (and he made me do two coats again . . bit of a stickler is our resident chippie . ) 🤓

Job done . . time for dinner. ☺️
