Seagull stopped flying

I have a few of these locos and run 4 of them on my layout ,

one of them is A4 Seagull (dec 2004) a good reliable performer

of these live steamers .

until one day she was about to start a run with 5 teak coaches behind

when she suddenly stopped .

i tryed to reverse .let her cool and lubrication etc but would not run .

i noticed that when steamed she would lock up but when cool

was free .

the first thing i tought was timing was out and found that al ok there

everything lined up as it should i then checked the piston and cylinders

for siezing when in steam mode, con rods disconnected, and they moved freely

when i turned wheels . so i decided to check the seals between cylinder

block and steam chest . so i took out that assembly .

it was then i found the problem .

the screw locking the reverse mechism to the shaft had come loose and upsetting

the timing . so i tighened this screw to the flat on the timing shaft and now my

seagull flys again !

Rodney that's a nice example of deductive reasoning . . . glad Seagull is flying again.

That loose screw is a common problem and if not dealt with the excessive play can result in further damage
