LS A4 Mallard Revisions

Hi All,

I’m posting to see if anyone else (ie multiple Mallard owners or those that service them often) has noticed different revisions of the A4 Mallard. I’ve only just learnt of two types of tender linkage and believe mine is the earlier with a single and now somewhat flexible metal brace between locomotive and tender. It is out of shape and lifts the rear of Loco a little. the other type of link is in two sections screwed together. Was this an improvement? It leads me to ask what other improvements were made in later revisions?

Given the number of locos we see at shows (or used to 🙂) I can confirm the bent connecting bar is acommonm problem.

I have seen many people pick up the loco in one hand with tender hanging in the air, both intentionally and accidentally.

As long as the bar is not kinked try placing the loco and tender on a flat surface to determine if the back wheels of the loco or the front wheels of the tender are lifting.

Then either hold down the loco and lift up the tender or hold down the tender and lift up the loco. Keep checking and repeating until you feel the weight distribution is even.
