A3 and A4 timing basic setup during loco reassembly

Could someone remind me how to time the A3 from scratch after fitting new rotary valve. I have fitted the valve and tried to maintain the correct gear meshing. Maurice tought me something like when the rotary timing lug is at 12 a clock the left piston has to be fully in in cylinder at equivalent of Top Dead Centre on a car engine. is this correct. I also have the picture showing the right wheels in a certain position at which point the timing lug has to be at TDC.

What is the best method of getting a reasonable starting position for timing.

I know how to time once the loco is assembled correctly and the timing is within range of the adjusting screws.

I copied & pasted Nick's link and can find nothing wrong with it so it should work.

The method used in the tutorial works for both tweaking and timing from scratch so it should help you get up and running again.
